Enhancing Your Virtual Presence and Communication Techniques to Reduce Telemedicine Liability
Presented by Connie Christian, MBA, CPHRM, KAMMCO Facility Risk Management and Patient Safety Advisor

As telemedicine gains traction in the health care landscape, clinicians must be prepared to operate technology-based systems for conducting routine care and exchanging information. Clinicians understand how effective communication and the establishment of therapeutic relationships can influence clinical outcomes. But what do these interpersonal skills look like when applied to telemedicine? In this presentation, Ms. Christian will discuss examples of how clinicians can 1) adapt their in-person communication process to telemedicine, 2) provide clinician congeniality in communications and 3) project a positive telepresence during patient encounters.

Bias in Clinical Practice and Its Effect on Health Outcomes
Presented by Yolanda Sims, JD, MHA, KAMMCO Loss Prevention and Risk Management Advisor

The presence of bias among health care professionals and the effect on quality of care is a highly documented cause for concern. This webinar will provide an in-depth understanding of how bias can affect patient care and contribute to health disparities. Ms. Sims will identify common biases that influence decision-making and offer practical strategies clinicians can implement to improve patient care and mitigate harm in their own environment.

Advanced Directives: What Are They and How Do They Impact the Constellation of Patient Care
Presented by Catherine Walberg, JD, KAMMCO Senior Vice President and General Counsel

Advanced directives allow patients to “speak” when incapacity renders them unable to speak for themselves. This session will explore the different categories of advance directives and provide insight on how they work together to inform the health care team of patients’ wishes. Ms. Walberg will present scenarios for how advanced directives direct who can and cannot play a role in a patient’s health care experience and the consequent impact on well-meaning family and friends. Come with your experience and questions, and we will do our best to unpack the tricky situations you experience every day!
