In mid-May, KAMMCO members will receive the 2024 Annual Report by mail. In the meantime, take a sneak peek at this year's annual report message, financial highlights, and key stats on claims, member services, and risk management.
Annual Report Message
Healthcare professionals face a rapidly evolving clinical environment, threats to professional independence, and diminished public trust in the healthcare system. In addition to—or perhaps because of— this challenging healthcare delivery environment, the threat of malpractice litigation looms large.
Excessive Verdicts Close to Home
In recent years, we’ve seen excessive malpractice verdicts uncomfortably close to home. For example, in Iowa, physicians, clinics, and hospitals have been hit with verdicts of $97 million, $50 million, and $27 million. One of those verdicts led to a clinic filing for bankruptcy, and the clinic alleged that their medical malpractice liability insurer (a large national medical malpractice carrier) mismanaged the malpractice claim and caused the catastrophic verdict.
Peace of Mind in KAMMCO's Approach to Claims
In these uncertain times, the value of being a KAMMCO member comes down to peace of mind. We’re at our best when you need us most—when you’re faced with an allegation of medical malpractice.
Our claims management professionals and defense attorneys deliver aggressive, informed, effective advocacy that makes KAMMCO’s approach to claims unique. Kansas is our home turf, and that matters when you face a claim. Extensive personal and local knowledge of the Kansas legal environment, including attorneys, courts, and juries allows KAMMCO to deliver exceptional management and defense of liability claims.
"Kansas is our home turf, and that matters when you face a claim."
KAMMCO puts the unique expertise of our claims team to work for you within careful claims review and analysis processes. We take the initiative in gathering all relevant medical records internally and engaging layers of confidential internal and external medical and legal analysis. Our thorough, high-touch process helps ensure an information and analysis advantage that places you in a position of strength rather than fear.
Along the way, we don’t lose sight of the fact that the most important person in the case is you. An allegation of malpractice can be among the most stressful and foreign experiences of your career. A KAMMCO Medical Liability Analyst (MLA) will be there to support you proactively. Our MLA’s role is to provide personal, substantive, and engaged advocacy on your behalf throughout the life of the claim—not to crunch numbers and determine the lowest cost way to try to close the company’s file. Your MLA can also connect you with a KAMMCO CARES litigation mentor, who provides confidential peer-to-peer support from a fellow healthcare professional who has navigated the experience before.
The value of our aggressive approach to claims continues to pay off long after your claim is closed. Our approach avoids unnecessary settlements reported to the National Practitioner Databank, which reduces the risk of unwanted attention from licensing authorities. Our well-earned reputation for strong advocacy in defense of our members also reduces the risk of our members being perceived as “easy targets.” Skillful plaintiffs’ attorneys know which insurance companies tend to pay settlements simply to avoid the high costs of aggressively defending claims—KAMMCO isn’t on that list.
As a member-owned company, we aim to provide the strength and support you need to allow you to practice medicine and care for patients the way you want to, even during uncertain times. Rest assured, when we say, “We’ll be here when you need us,” we mean it.
